Hawaii suits honeymoons because it delivers tropical scenery without a visa, a long-haul language barrier or a resort-only experience. The decision that shapes everything is which island, and the honest answer is that they are genuinely different rather than interchangeable.

Choosing your island

  • Maui. The default honeymoon island. Road to Hana, Haleakala sunrise, excellent beaches and the widest range of resorts. Note that Lahaina was devastated by the 2023 wildfire; check current conditions and visit respectfully.
  • Kauai. The most dramatic and the greenest. Na Pali Coast, Waimea Canyon, fewer resorts and a quieter feel. The best choice for couples who want scenery over nightlife.
  • Big Island. The most varied: active volcano, black and green sand beaches, snorkelling with manta rays at night, and snow on Mauna Kea. Beaches are the weakest of the four.
  • Oahu. Honolulu, Waikiki and the North Shore. Best for a first visit combining city and beach, and the easiest to reach.

Two islands over ten days works well. Three is too many, because inter-island flights eat half a day each.

Romantic experiences worth the money

  • Helicopter tour over the Na Pali Coast on Kauai, which is the only way to see most of it.
  • Haleakala sunrise on Maui, which requires a reserved permit booked in advance.
  • Manta ray night snorkel off Kona.
  • A traditional luau, choosing a smaller one over the largest resort productions.
  • Sunset sail on the Kona or Maui coast, with whale watching between December and April.

When to go

April to June and September to mid-December offer the best combination of weather and value. Winter brings bigger surf on north shores and whale season. Summer and the Christmas period are the most expensive and crowded.

Practical notes

  • Rent a car on every island except if you are staying purely in Waikiki. Book early, as availability is genuinely tight.
  • Reef-safe sunscreen is legally required. Oxybenzone and octinoxate products are banned.
  • Several sites now require advance reservations, including Haleakala sunrise, Diamond Head and Hanauma Bay.
  • Resort fees and parking are charged on top of room rates almost everywhere.
  • Respect is not optional. Do not touch turtles or monk seals, stay on marked trails, and treat cultural sites accordingly.
