Southeast Asia remains the best value long-term travel region in the world, but the gap between countries is now large. Assuming the whole region costs the same is the most common budgeting mistake.

The countries ranked by cost

  • Cheapest: Laos, Cambodia, Indonesia outside Bali, and northern Vietnam.
  • Mid: Thailand outside the islands, the Philippines, Malaysia.
  • Expensive: Singapore, Thai islands in high season, Bali’s south coast, Brunei.

Singapore alone can cost as much per day as a week in Laos, so a route that treats it as a transit stop rather than a destination protects the budget considerably.

Accommodation

  • Guesthouses and family-run places over hostels in the cheaper countries, where a private room can cost less than a dorm bed in Bali.
  • Book the first night only, then look in person. Walk-in rates are frequently lower outside peak season.
  • Negotiate weekly rates. Staying five nights instead of two usually cuts the nightly rate.
  • Fan rooms instead of air conditioning saves a meaningful amount over months.

Food

This is where Southeast Asia is genuinely generous. Street food and market stalls are both the cheapest and frequently the best food available. Eat where there is a queue of locals and high turnover, which handles both quality and hygiene.

Western restaurants in tourist areas cost several times more for worse food. Local coffee and fresh fruit shakes from stalls rather than cafes.

Transport

  • Overnight buses and trains save accommodation as well as fare. Vietnamese and Thai sleeper trains are comfortable enough.
  • Book regional flights early. AirAsia, VietJet and Scoot are cheap if booked ahead and expensive last minute.
  • Local buses over tourist minibuses, which charge several times more for the same route.
  • Grab for city transport, which removes haggling and is usually cheaper than negotiated taxis.
  • Renting a scooter is cheap and is also the largest single risk. Ensure you have the correct licence and that your insurance covers it, or a minor accident becomes a very large bill.

Where budgets actually leak

  • Islands. Everything costs more once it has to arrive by boat.
  • Alcohol. Frequently the largest single line in a backpacker budget, and heavily taxed in Indonesia and Malaysia.
  • Moving too fast. Transport and first-night premiums add up. Slowing down is the most effective saving available.
  • ATM fees. Thai and Indonesian machines charge high fixed fees. Withdraw larger amounts less often.
  • Visa runs and border fees. Plan the route to minimise them.
