Europe has a reputation as an expensive destination, but that reputation mostly applies to Western Europe’s capital cities in peak summer. A genuinely affordable European trip is entirely possible with the right approach.
Go east and south for value
Central and Eastern Europe (Poland, Hungary, Czechia, Romania) and parts of the Balkans and southern Europe (Portugal, Albania, Bulgaria) consistently offer Western Europe’s architecture and culture at a fraction of the cost of Paris, London, or Amsterdam.
Travel shoulder season
May, June, and September offer noticeably lower accommodation and flight prices than July and August, along with thinner crowds at major sights, for weather that is still comfortably warm across most of the continent.
Use buses and budget rail over flights
Long-distance buses and advance-purchase train tickets between European cities frequently undercut budget airline fares once airport transfer time and baggage fees are factored in, particularly for shorter regional hops.
Hostels and budget accommodation
A well-reviewed hostel with private room options offers a genuinely comfortable stay for a fraction of a hotel’s price in most European cities, and many now cater as much to budget-conscious couples and solo travelers over 30 as to classic backpackers.
Eat like a local, not like a tourist
Restaurants directly on major squares or landmarks charge a significant premium for the location alone. Walking two or three streets away, and eating lunch (often cheaper than dinner for the same menu) rather than always dining in the evening, cuts food costs substantially.
Free and low-cost sightseeing
Many major European museums offer free entry on specific days or evenings each month, and most cities’ free walking tours (tip-based) provide a solid orientation and history lesson at whatever price you choose to pay.
City tourist cards
For cities with several paid attractions on the itinerary, a city tourist card bundling public transport and entry fees often works out cheaper than paying individually, though it is only worth it if the included attractions match your actual plans.
