All-inclusive family resorts solve a specific problem: the constant low-level negotiation of holidays with children. No deciding where to eat, no working out what a day costs, no wallet at the pool. Whether that is worth the premium depends on getting the choice right.

What separates a good family resort from a big one

  • Kids club quality and age bands. A club that splits 4-7 and 8-12 works. One that lumps 4-12 together does not.
  • Pool design. Multiple pools matter more than one large one. A separate quiet pool is what makes the trip work for adults.
  • Room configuration. Connecting rooms, suites with a divider, or swim-ups. A single room with four people in it undoes everything else.
  • Genuine inclusions. Check whether kids club, watersports, childcare and speciality restaurants are included or charged.
  • Beach quality. Some resorts have a spectacular pool and a rocky or seaweed-heavy shoreline.

Where to look, by region

Caribbean and Mexico

The densest concentration of family all-inclusives, particularly Riviera Maya, Punta Cana and Jamaica. Best value in the category. Check sargassum seaweed reports for the season you are travelling.

Mediterranean

Turkey, Greece, Spain and Portugal. Turkey offers the largest resorts with the most facilities for the price. Greece is stronger on smaller, better-designed properties.

Canary Islands

The reliable winter sun option for European families, with short flights and year-round warmth.

Indian Ocean and Middle East

Mauritius and Dubai both do family all-inclusive well. Dubai is easiest for short trips; Mauritius for a longer stay.

Asia

Thailand, Vietnam and Bali have fewer true all-inclusives but excellent family resorts with meal plans, often at better value.

Questions to ask before booking

  • What are the kids club hours, and does it close for lunch?
  • Are speciality restaurants included, and do they need reserving on arrival?
  • Is there a supplement for children, and up to what age do they stay free?
  • How far is the room from the pool and the main restaurant?
  • Is the beach swimmable, and is there a lifeguard?
  • Are there quiet hours, or is there entertainment near the rooms until late?

Getting more from it

Book flights that land in the afternoon rather than late at night. Ask about early check-in in advance. Use the kids club early in the week so children settle before you rely on it. And leave the resort at least once, because the surrounding country is usually why you chose the destination.
